di|vid´ed|ly, adverb.
di|vid´ed|ness, noun.
Usage divided usage. Usage is said to be divided when two or more forms exist and are equally reputable. Divided usage is not applied to localisms (like poke for bag) or to differences, like ain't and isn't, which belong to separate levels of the language. It applies to spellings, pronunciations, or constructions on which speakers and writers of similar education might differ. The two pronunciations of either «EE thuhr and Y thuhr», the two spellings of catalog (catalog and catalogue), and the two past tenses of sing (sang and sung) are examples of divided usage.
